Super Mario Bros. Movie Second Trailer: 4 things we loved

November 30, 2022

Yesterday, we got the second trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. After Mr Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Melandri’s customary appearances, Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) and Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong) also said a quick hello – and we even met Rogen’s pet dog, Zelda! However, after that short preamble, it was straight into the much-anticipated reveal. And while we were already super excited about the movie (check our thoughts from the first trailer here), this second one only heightened our expectations.

We’ve included the full video here: and after you’ve watched it be sure to check out 4 things we really loved about it below:

1. Peach is no damsel in distress

While in most of the Super Mario Bros. video games Princess Peach is the quintessential damsel in distress, not only does Anya Taylor-Joy’s voice gives us a great new take on the Mushroom Kindom Royal, but in the movie, she seems to be a uber-capable badass – and we’re all for it.

2. So many easter eggs!

From the red iron girders from the original Donkey Kong game, to a quick view of an array of Kongs and familiar enemies, several power-ups and iconic poses – it’s clear the animators have really gone deep into everything Mario-related. And for huge fans like us – this makes us very, very happy!

3. Some of the story revealed?

This second trailer really seems to confirm that Mario has been brought into this world to take on Bowser. He’s just a normal human, a plumber from the Bronx. And from what we saw so far – this is really the story about how a regular joe becomes the hero we all know and love. It’s a familiar trope, but who doesn’t love a tale of an unlikely hero? Plus, within this framework, even Chris Pratt’s less-than-iconic voice becomes less of an issue. Plus, with a longer look at Charlie Day’s Luigi as Bowser’s kidnap victim – we’re sure the humour is going to be on point too!

4. MARIO KART!

As we’ve mentioned above there is so much to love about the trailer and so much to see, but as a massive Mario Kart fan – having the final scene show off an epic trip down Rainbow Road with Mario and the gang driving off to save the world definitely lead to us almost shedding a tear of pure joy.
