Well, rumours and leaks had been happening for a while (here’s our article speculating about its launch back in March 2022), but they were definitely hotting up recently and today (16 January 2025), Nintendo finally revealed their new console! It’s going to be called the Switch 2 (so mad they did not call it the Super Switch)! So, yes those hoping for a brand new console idea, will be disappointed. However, for those of us who were just hoping for a good upgrade to the Switch with a little more power, updated Joy-Cons, some extra features and bigger screen real estate – it looks like we’ll be getting exactly what we’ve been hoping for.

While no specs were revealed we did get a visual breakdown as to how the Switch 2 will look compared to the original Switch – with a good look at the bigger overall size, updated Joy-Cons and connections (was the mouse functionality true!?) and confirmation of backwards compatibility. And was that a fun nod to the Joy-Con drift issue here? Plus, we even had a possible look at a new launch game – yes folks, it looks like we will be getting a new Mario Kart!

I suspect Nintendo would’ve liked to announce this a little later this year, but with leaks reaching an all-time high over the last few weeks – they’ve pulled the trigger. And while it’s all very exciting, sadly we’ll still have to wait quite a bit longer for more info. We’re only getting the official Switch 2 Nintendo Direct on the 2nd of April 2025. Until then, we’ve been told that Nintendo will be hosting Switch 2 Experiences in cities around the world – but unfortunately, as with so many of these events, Africa is apparently not part of the world (Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania (well, Australia) will have these experiences between April and June 2025). At least, it hopefully means the Switch 2 will release relatively soon after that!
