Well, we know it’s not quite Nintendo news – but Sonic and Mario have so much history that we couldn’t help but cover the news about the new Sonic movie. The original movie got a lot of flack early on because of the way Sonic looked, but after a redesign – most filmgoers and fans seemed to agree that not only did Sonic’s new look reflect his iconic videogames but the movie was also actually pretty good. The new movie is soon to hit theatres and while we got a new trailer earlier today (which you can check out here), a few eagle-eyed fans quickly noted that the new poster for the movie looks rather familiar…

As you can see from the Tweet above (and several others just like it) – the new poster has awesomely drawn inspiration from the Box Art for Sonic 2. For those familiar with the history – Sonic 2 was launched with the famous ‘Sonic 2sday’ marketing campaign by Tom Kalinske and the SEGA Of America team when they were at their height of competition with Nintendo. And if you’re not so familiar with this story I can’t recommend Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation by Blake J. Harris – which also just happens to be my favourite video game-related book and gives you a great in-depth look at SEGA (but also Nintendo) during a pretty significant time in home console history.
