Yesterday (10 August), the Splatoon 3 Direct happened and it covered and revealed a lot! But never fear – here’s a quick bulleted recap of all the news:
1. Stages:
- Turf War 4v4 is back – new moves Squid Surge (jump up walls in a single move), Squid Roll (jump out of ink and change directions in a single move can repel ink if shining)
- The Splatlands: Scorch Gorge, Eeltail Alley, Mincemeat Metalworks, Undertow Spillway, Hagglefish Market
- Returning Greater Inkopolis: Museum D’Alfonsino, Hammerhead Bridge, Mahi-Mahi Resort
- Also: Inkblot Art Academy, Sturgeon Shipyard MakoMart, Wahoo World
- Plus more stages to be added in free updates#
2. Weapons
- All weapons from previous games will be available
- New: Stringers
- New weapon type: Splatanas
- Special Weapons:
- Tacticooler (fridge with beverages that can temporarily boost certain abilities ie speed)
- Wave Breaker (mark location and send waves of paint to destroy enemies)
- Reefslider (Sliding, splitting and exploding)
- Returning weapons: Tenta Missiles, Inkjet, Ink Storm, Ultra Stamp, Booyah Bomb
- Weapons are now purchased not with currency but with licenses obtained by levelling up and using the same weapons consistently
3. Fashion
- New headgear, clothing and shoes not only keep you looking fresh but also tweak your in-battle abilities
4. Lobby
- Online Turf Wars
- Anarchy Battles (Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, Clam Blitz). Solo (series) or Team-based (Open)
- Private Battles
- Test Range – can warm up while waiting for rivals to join
- Ghosts – online friends will appear as hologram-like Ghosts in the lobby and you can then join them online
- Battle Replays – fast forward, or change to other players’ views and check out and even share the highlights of your previous battle
- Locker Room – your space to express yourself with a unique a paint scheme, items (which can be purchased) and placement
5. Customisation & Updates
- Splash screens (including banners, badges and titles)
- Emotes – change up how your inkling wins
- New catalogues to be released every three months for 2 years, plus new weapons too
- X Battle & League Battle to be added in future updates
- Major Paid DLC coming in the future
6. Table Turf Battle
- A whole new game inside the game
- 1v1 duelling card battler with shapes combining Splatoon and Tetris
- Over 150 cards to collect and use
- All players will be gifted and starter deck
7. Salmon Run: Next Wave
- New Boss Salmonids (Slammin’ Lid, Big Shot)
- New King Salmonid (Cohozuna)
- New tank cannon actually fire golden eggs for massive damage
- Big Run – Salmonids invade the city every few months
8. Story Mode – Return of the Mammalians
- Agent 3 takes on the Octarian Army
- Multiple stages and a great way to learn the game’s mechanics
- The epic finale of the Splatoon story saga
9. Splatsville Extras
- Illustrations can be posted (including verticals)
- The concession stand will give you ability-boosting snacks
- Photo mode (images taken can be posted or displayed in your locker)
- Recon guide – visit any stage and familiarise yourself with the layout before a battle
- Splatnet 3 (unique gear, Crusty Sean’s Wandercrust tour, mobile wallpapers and more on the Nintendo Mobile app)
10. Amiibo
- Splatoon Amiibo will allow you to save gear combinations as ‘freshest fits’ making it easy to swap outfits
- Unlock special gear and snap photos with Amiibo
- Three new Amiibo -releasing winter (northern hemisphere)!
11. Deep Cut + Splatfests
- Shiver, Frye and Big Man host the news programme Anarchy Splatcast
- Get info from the trio via the sea-cucumber phone
- Splatfests now feature three teams to choose from
- Two halves – 1st (4v4 Turf War Battles), 2nd (Tri-color Tur War)
- Splatfest World Premiere 27 August – pre-release (Theme: Rock, Paper, Scissors)
