As a huge Super Mario Bros. fan, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t really excited about the fact that we’re getting a full-length animated movie later this year. However, that isn’t to say that I don’t have my reservations. I’m a bit worried about what the team that made Minions (Illumination) will do to the beloved video game characters. And while I don’t have as strong feelings about the cast as some people online seem to have had, and am very glad Charles Martinet will have some part to play, even I am a little concerned about how Chris Pratt will play Mario. That being said, Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto is seemingly very involved in the movie’s production and so that does give me hope.
However, we still haven’t seen just about anything about what the story will be like and how an oddball tale about a moustachioed plumber and a magical Mushroom Kingdom that you visit through big green pipes will be handled. And it seems, not even the voice actors know very much. During a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Charlie Day (who will be playing Luigi) revealed that he records his lines on his own and has not even been able to read the entire script. Of course, this could all be misdirection, but we all know how serious Nintendo can be about their IP and how much they hate leaks – so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was all true. So we’ll all have to wait a little while longer to find out any real details about the move…
