The Switch has now seemingly outsold the original PlayStation

January 25, 2022

As per William D’Angelo, writing for vgchartz.com, the week ending 15th January 2022 (in which an estimated 341,662 Switches were sold) also saw the Nintendo Switch lifetime global sales overtake those of the original PlayStation. The PlayStation (and later PSOne) sold in the region of 102.5M units. The Switch has now ‘unofficially’  sold somewhere in the 102.8 million range; Official numbers from Nintendo are expected sometime next week during their financial report.

For those of you that follow Nintendo (and related topics) on Twitter, you’ve likely come across a really great Nintendo-related commenter that goes by the handle, @Stealth40k (if not he is really worth a follow). He is really insightful when it comes to a variety of Nintendo-centric topics (especially anything JRPG!). And, as so many of now expect, he predicts that not only will official reports confirm that the Switch has outsold the PlayStation (becoming the fifth best-selling video game console ever) but that by the end of the year it will likely jump into the third spot, surpassing both the PS4 and the Game Boy.

Even considering that sales include all three versions of the Nintendo Switch (original, Lite and OLED) the numbers are just staggering, especially when you remember what a sales disaster the WiiU was. In short, it’s a great time to be a Nintendo fan!
